Our Roots

Way back in 1955, a cool (and very handy) guy named Red Brummel sold his house and used the proceeds to buy a hardware store in the Godwin Heights neighborhood of Grand Rapids. He made plumbing service calls while his wife, Louise, ran the hardware store. Word of Red’s talent with pipes and fixtures soon spread – and by 1957, he was working with area real estate developers to install new plumbing into area homes and businesses. That work drove him to build the largest inventory of plumbing parts on this side of the state, a collection that gave rise to the famous slogan we debuted in the late 60s: “Godwin’s Got It!”
