wHAT IS WATER HARDNESS AND WHY SHOULD i BE CONCERNED?

Water hardness is the term given to Calcium and Magnesium ions dissolved in your water which are responsible for the white residue left on surfaces after water has evaporated. As a result of these ions being dissolved, you cannot physically/mechanically filter them out. Instead, they need to undergo a process called ionic-exchange. Water Softeners contain millions of very small polymer beads which have a negative charge. This negative charge attracts the Calcium and Magnesium (Ca2+ and Mg2+) which have a positive charge. During regeneration, brine is rinsed through the unit. This high concentration of NaCl causes the Calcium and Magnesium ions to ‘let go’ of the beads and exchange themselves for the salt, allowing the process to begin anew.

Water hardness has numerous effects that are considered disadvantageous. Soap scum is one of those effects; an example would be that nasty ring that develops in tubs. Another is decreased longevity and efficiency of appliances such as your dishwasher, washing machine, etc. Water hardness can also make soaps and detergents less effective.
