Preventing and thawing frozen pipes

Preventative Action:

  1. Keep garage doors closed if there is plumbing above the garage.
  2. Open cabinet doors to allow warm air to circulate around plumbing.
  3. Keep home temperature above 55˚F if leaving for an extended period of time —especially if the home has not been properly winterized.

The pipes are frozen… now what?

  1. Keep the faucet open. When the line starts to thaw out, the moving water will help remove any blockage.
  2. Apply heat in the vicinity of the frozen pipes —but do not place space heaters in confined areas, as this could be a potential fire hazard. Keep chemicals away from heat sources.
  3. Maintain your thermostat setting to ‘daytime’ levels and do not turn it back to ‘nighttime’ temperatures. This may help keep pipes on the verge of freezing warm enough.
